Buna Ash - Hand-turned Japanese Wood Gold Leaf Lacquered Sake Cup from Ogon Rakuyo Guinomi Series
The Ogon Rakuyo Guinomi Series is a collaboration with our Kyoto gold leaf master artisan and a woodcarving artisan based in the densely forested mountains above Kyoto. The series includes five of the most loved Japanese hardwoods: Keyaki (Japanese Zelkova), Nara (Japanese Oak), Kaede (Japanese Maple), Sakura (Cherry) and Buna (Ash).
The cup shape for each variety of wood is different and is intended to best express the unique character of the wood.
The bottom of each ‘guinomi’ cup has the Japanese ‘kanji’ character of the tree variety hot branded into the wood.
Appreciate and enjoy the grain of each wood variety. Let your guests choose a cup of their liking to start the festivities. Pair the shape and wood grain to the perfect sake.
Each cup is lacquered in the traditional Japanese ‘urushi’ technique, both inside and out. On the outside, the lacquer finish beautifully expresses the unique wood grain. The inside has three layers of lacquer and two layers of gold leaf, making for a breathtakingly beautiful, yet durable surface.
