Meticulously Handcrafted Pure Platinum Powder Lacquered Woven Bamboo Shoulder Bag with Kumihimo Strap and Sashiko Inner

This unique handbag is the result of a collaboration between four traditional Japanese artisans. The result is an astounding creation!

1. Bamboo Weaving: The bag shell is a rigid structure handwoven by a traditional bamboo weaver artisan in a delightful wave-like pattern called ‘nami ajiro’.

2. Platinum Lacquer: The outer surface of the woven bamboo is painstakingly lacquered with Japanese ‘urushi’ lacquer and covered in three layers of 100% platinum powder. The Kyoto father and son gold leaf artisan team that we collaborated with to create this bag developed and perfected this lacquer and precious metal powder technique over 3 decades.

3. Sashiko Stitching: The fabric inner of the bamboo shell is made with the traditional ‘furoshiki’ wrapping cloth material which is a soft and durable cotton. The decorative ‘sashiko’ stitching is not only aesthetically pleasing but the pattern itself functionally reinforces the fabric.

4. Kumihimo Strap: Kumihimo is a braided silk cord used to close traditional Japanese clothing such as kimono and obi. It was also used to assemble the plates that make up samurai armor. Uji, in Southern Kyoto, is historically the top producer of kumihimo in Japan. The beautiful and soft silk kumihimo strap, drawstring and tassels for this handbag are hand-braided by a traditional Uji artisan.
